Pareidolie

Pareidolia for wind quintet was commissioned in 2021 by the Cultural Committee of German Business within the Federation of German Industries (BDI e.V.) and premiered in October 2021 by the Pacific Quintet, winners of the music competition “Ton und Erklärung” (Sound and Explanation), at the Haus des Rundfunks in Ber­lin.

“­Par­eido­li­a” refers to the phenomenon of recognizing supposed faces, figures, or shapes in objects and patterns. Similarly, seemingly familiar shapes, harmonic sequences, or melodies can be discovered in this composition. The piece thrives on the fact that these seemingly familiar elements are interrupted by sudden cuts or twists and turns, leading in a new direction. The materials used for this purpose are further developments of what has gone before. In this way, the entire piece is connected by an audible thread.
