(red.) The competition of the Kulturfonds Baden, in which students of the Karlsruhe University of Music competed for the Rainer Koch Memorial Prize, has been decided. One or more works by Wolfgang Rihm had to be performed in a solo or chamber music setting.
Among the ten applications there were three prize winners: A second prize (1000 Euro) goes to the Liedduo with the soprano Yue Wang and Mariko Sakonju at the piano, who interpreted "Three Hölderlin poems for soprano and piano". Two first prizes of 2000 euros each went to the pianists Daria Vorontsova and Yue Zou, who convinced the jury with "Maske" for two pianos. The Lied duo with baritone Lorenzo de Cunzo and pianist Yeon Seo Ra also receive a first prize for their performance of Hölderlin fragments 57 and 92 as well as songs based on texts by Hermann Lenz.
The jury, chaired by Wolfgang Rihm, included Sontraud Speidel, Franziska Lee, Moritz Laßmann and Mathias Tritsch, the president of the Kulturfonds Baden.
The Hochschule für Musik will host the prize-winners' concert on Monday, December 5, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. in the Velte Hall. The concert will also feature a performance by the young mezzo-soprano Laura Streckert; she is not yet 20 years old and by far the youngest participant in the competition, which was contested with mostly older duos. Although she did not win a prize, she will nevertheless take part in the winners' concert. The Kulturfonds would like to support this special commitment in a "future-oriented" way: Laura Streckert and Julius von Forstner (piano) will receive a sponsorship prize of 500 euros from additional funds.
